TORONTO — Video discovered by the widow of actor John Candy is giving SCTV fans a look back at some of the stars of the iconic Canadian comedy series.

The Super 8mm footage shows SCTV stars and writers challenging crew members in a friendly softball game in 1982.

Playing for the Melonville Mexicans are Candy and co-stars Dave Thomas, Catherine O’Hara, Rick Moranis, Eugene Levy and Joe Flaherty.

(Melonville is the fictional hometown of SCTV.)

Moranis and Thomas double as play-by-play announcers and Levy acts as a passionate spectator.

The footage was shot at an Edmonton park — or “Melonville Stadium” — before production of the series returned to Toronto. (Only seasons 3 and 4 of SCTV were made at Edmonton’s ITV Studios.)

The eight-minute video was found by Rose Candy, whose husband died in 1994 at 43, and posted on the SCTV YouTube channel.

SCTV debuted in 1976 on Global, moved to CBC in 1980 and then to Superchannel in 1983. It ended its run in 1984 but lead to movie careers for most of its cast.
