Martin Scorsese to direct ‘SCTV’ comedy special on Netflix

Netflix has announced that the Academy Award-winning director Martin Scorsese will direct an untitled Netflix original comedy special exploring the enduring legacy of the Emmy-winning sketch comedy show Second City Television (SCTV).

Scorsese will reunite comedy legends and former SCTV co-stars Joe Flaherty, Eugene Levy, Andrea Martin, Catherine O’Hara, Martin Short and Dave Thomas in front of a live audience for An Afternoon with SCTV, which will be moderated by Jimmy Kimmel.

Netflix confirms Scorsese’s special will “explore the enduring legacy” of the series and feature a sit-down down interview with former cast members.

The live reunion will be held at Toronto’s Elgin Theatre on Sunday, May 13 at 3 p.m. and the filming will be part of the Netflix special, produced by longtime SCTV producer Andrew Alexander.

Martin teased the reunion special last year.

“The thing about SCTV is we did it in a vacuum, so we weren’t aware that it had any impact until many years afterwards,” Martin told the Los Angeles Times. “That generation of brilliant comedians, there are so many fans — Judd ApatowConan O’Brien, Jimmy Kimmel, Bill Hader. It’s been 40 years since it’s been on the air. We’re in the process of talking about a reunion show. And Martin Scorsese has talked to us about directing it.”

The satirical series began as an offshoot of Toronto’s Second City and launched a year after Saturday Night Live.

The Canadian classic SCTV aired for six seasons between 1976 and 1984, which quickly became one of pop culture’s touchstone comedies.

The series’ stars include some of the most celebrated names in laughter, including the late John Candy, Harold Ramis and Tony Rosato.

As of this writing, Scorsese’s SCTV reunion special does not have a release date.
