Mark Brand is one of North America’s foremost social entrepreneurs. With eleven businesses under his belt, he is determined to breathe new life into struggling communities through his work in social impact business.
Five years ago, Brand took over Save On Meats (a Vancouver butcher and diner) and created The Token Program—an alternate currency to feed those in need without a cash exchange. Since then, over 100,000 tokens have been redeemed and created interactions between those who have, and those in need.
Along with managing the five companies under the MB Inc. umbrella, Brand is a graduate of THNK, a Stanford fellow, a Professor of Innovation at USC, Executive Chef for Pope Francis’s Laudato Si Challenge, an advisor to corporations and agencies working to make real change, and he has appeared on the popular Food Network show: Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives.
In partnership with his charity A Better Life Foundation, more than 1.8 million meals have left Save On’s doors to feed those who struggle. As a person with lived experience with addiction and homelessness, Mark knows first-hand the important role that community plays in helping struggling neighbours get a fresh start. On Thursday, November 15, 2018, he will be speaking about his lived experience, how he overcame it, and how everyone is capable of making change with a little help.
Our 2018 Fall Banquet & Silent Auction highlight is Men’s Mission, a branch of Mission Services of London that provides safe, emergency shelter for men experiencing homelessness and also offers a temporary residence for men who require longer term care and support. Services include nutritious meals, a clothing room, chapel, counselling, life skills coaching, and assistance securing permanent housing. Proceeds of the event will support important client needs at Men’s Mission.
